How to Spot Failing OEM Risers
Cracks, Flaking and Fatigue
One of the first signs your OEM risers may be failing is visible cracking near the clamp area or base. Even hairline fractures are a massive red flag — they indicate that the brittle die-cast alloy is starting to give way under repeated stress. Chrome flaking or bubbling can also reveal deeper structural problems hidden beneath the surface. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored; a cracked riser can fail suddenly, leading to total loss of control and a dangerous riding situation.
Slipping or Movement at the Bars
If your handlebars are starting to move slightly when braking or accelerating, it’s another warning sign. OEM risers often rely on soft threads and shallow engagement, which can loosen over time. Hard chrome-plated surfaces also prevent the riser from “biting” into the bar’s knurl pattern, reducing grip and stability. Once that happens, the only thing keeping your handlebars in place is friction — not the knurl. This is especially risky for heavier bikes or riders who spend a lot of time on uneven roads.
Protect Yourself Before It Fails
Don’t wait for a failure to tell you your risers are due for replacement. If you notice stripped threads, slipping bars, or any visible cracks, replace them immediately with CNC-machined aluminium risers. Barcraft’s range of precision-engineered risers provides superior strength, fitment, and finish — ensuring your handlebars stay where they should be, no matter the conditions. It’s a small upgrade that makes a big difference to both performance and rider safety.
